WHAT IS PROJECT SANKALP?

Although coffee as a brown liquid may appear uniform across many cups, we assure you, not all coffees are the same. The network of agriculture and commerce that makes coffee consumption possible in this century, is fascinating. The only step of the coffee value chain that is impacted locally is the roasting. The insane effort that goes into elevating the quality of the raw material all happens before that, at origin.

A thousand variables threaten the journey of coffee to a cup and about a million things that could go wrong along the way. It's a miracle that coffee makes it to our cups at all. And beyond that, we face a higher differentiation. When it comes to specialty coffee, the quality of any given coffee is determined by the score it garners in a qualitative evaluation called 'cupping'. A 60-point scoring coffee, on a scale determined by the Specialty Coffee Association, is rendered commodity grade. A coffee scoring 80 points and above is considered specialty; reaching this score takes a herculean effort in itself by all actors in the coffee supply chain. In the Indian Subcontinent of the 21st century, we've only inherited the former. But we must move to the latter. However, real beauty shines through at and beyond the 86-point score. At 90, near perfection is attained. These are the global benchmarks of the 21st century that Project Sankalp set out to cement, overturning decades of entrenched inertia in the Indian coffee industry.

Project Sankalp is overcomes entrenched themes in other ways than just cup scores as well. All of the 36 lots that comprise project Sankalp were cultivated by smallholder coffee farmers — an underrepresented majority in the Indian Subcontinent — and processed by Waribok_Daribok. The christening of the project aims to tie these, and the themes that emerge from them, into a single sanskrit word: 'Sankalp'. Checkout the collection here.
